Product Evaluations

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers indoor air quality one of the top five environmental threats to human health. This emphasis is well-deserved, as chemical emissions from everyday products (such as building materials, cleaners, furniture, appliances, personal care products and electronics) are known to cause or worsen a myriad of health problems — including headaches, loss of coordination, developmental delays, asthma, allergies and possibly even cancer. The most effective way to achieve good indoor air quality is to control the source of the pollutants: in other words, choose low-emitting products and materials.

Product Evaluations testing by Air Quality Sciences (AQS) helps manufacturers ensure that their products are low-emitting, low-toxicity and low-odor. First, we place the products in a sealed environmental testing chamber, where we can easily control the temperature, humidity and airflow. Then, using our state-of-the-art testing technology, we measure and identify up to 12,000 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants, including respirable particles and ozone. AQS operates more than 60 dynamic, stainless steel environmental chambers ranging in size from 0.05 m3 to 32 m3 (the average size of a full room).

Since 1989, AQS has helped thousands of product manufacturers in a variety of industries ensure the safety and acceptability of their products. And we continue to do so today. Whether a manufacturer needs to meet industry requirements, achieve third-party certification through organizations like the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute or respond to odor complaints about its products, AQS offers a comprehensive range of services to achieve the desired results.
